Use the following headings to plan your layout:
Keep it to about 50 words, highlight relevant experience, key attributes and goals. Contact details include your name, address, telephone number and e-mail.
- List your most recent position first and focus on the outcome of your work;
- Include role, organisation, dates, main responsibilities and achievements;
- Provide specific details on your personal role rather than the team;
- Include factual information where possible on size of project, any values etc;
- Include all roles over the last 10 years particularly if you have been at an organisation for long time.
- IT packages you’ve used, foreign languages etc.

A cover letter provides the introduction to your CV and is the first impression the prospective employer will have of you. It will help differentiate you from the rest of the CV’s that the employer has seen.
- Keep the cover letter to one page
- Keep it structured, organised and concise
- If you are applying via email, add the cover letter into the body of the email as attachments can sometimes be blocked due to spam filters
- Make it personal and address it to the actual contact
- Make it clear immediately what position you are applying for
- Mention what it is about the job that attracts you
- Include your understanding and knowledge of the company and show how you fit the criteria.
- Address your strengths and qualifications that are relevant to that position
- Outline your current position and why you are currently looking for a new job but do not include anything negative

- Close the letter by stating when you are available for interview and when you are available to start
